the meditation of cleaning house

There is a certain sense of accomplishment that comes along with having a clean home.  I find there is pleasure not only in the final product, but also in the process.  I wouldn’t say I love to clean, but I do love when it is clean; but to get to that point, the action has to be taken.

I devote certain days to cleaning.  I do a seasonal deep cleaning, so like spring cleaning four times a year.  I love the freshness of this routine.  It helps me get to the areas that I may have forgotten or overlooked during my routine cleaning.  It is also that sense of accomplishment that rewards me every time I do it.  It also helps me to flush out the unwanted clutter that somehow always seems to make its way back into my spaces.

Yesterday was one of those seasonal deep cleaning days.  It was the three of us working away at it.  Ok, it was mostly me, and my older son was a great help, but the younger one did minimal work because he has been down with a hefty cold and lacking on energy.  Still, that feeling when you sit down, sore back and dried out hands from soapy water washes…that feeling is so rewarding.  Good, old fashioned manual labor.  It still has a place in our technologically driven world.

With a minimalist-style lifestyle, the seasonal cleaning sessions, as well as the weekly and daily I might add, they have become easier and shorter sessions.  They no longer take a week, or a weekend.  They take an afternoon, give or take.  Another reason why I adore this philosophy.  Now there is more time to do what I want, and I was able to sleep well last night knowing that the chore of house cleaning was completed.

meditation in modern life

This weekend I have had the very fortunate opportunity to spend it with a group of ladies with the same common interest.  We have all gathered to learn how to teach meditation.

What interests me about meditation is that while some consider it to be “New Age”, it seems that every culture and religion has some form of meditation; they may just call it something different.  Prayer with a rosary, meditation with a Tibetan mala… really, not much difference there.

Mindfulness is a buzz word that has been thrown around lately, but what does it mean to you?  Do things with intention.  Recognize what it is that you are doing.  Mindfulness is being taught in some schools.  Being mindful while eating is a tool used for some diet regimes.  All forms of meditation.

You can sit to meditate.  Lay down to meditate (be careful not to fall asleep, although, that is yet another form…), or walk to meditate.  This one is most difficult for me because walking is associated with thinking for me, which is the opposite of meditation.

Nature lends itself to calming and quieting the mind and is a wonderful place to sit and be still.  Have you ever tried it?  It is blissful.  It seems to melt away the stresses of what we do during our daily grind.

In the path of my life, it makes sense that meditation and mindfulness is present.  Along with minimalism, where intention of what lives or comes into my space, mindfulness is also present in every decision I make when it comes to consumerism or purging.  I become more acutely aware of the disarray in my space and it affects my inner serenity.  I wonder, does it affect yours also?

body and mind

With the days getting longer, I can feel spring is just around the corner.  The sun is almost cresting the horizon as my alarm calls me to wake in the mornings, which makes it easier and more pleasant when I start my day.  I am sure that many others feel the same way.

Winter can take a hold on us.  Seasonal Affective Disorder makes it harder and harder to get through the day for many living in the northern hemisphere.  I have discovered how it truly can affect our mood and outlook.  It’s like a seasonal depression that you can feel being lifted with the longer days and warmer temperatures slowly returning to us.  I have also found that taking the time for self care and physical exercise also helps quite a bit.  It gives me a bit more energy even when I think I’m tapped out.

I take that as a reminder that looking out for our physical health is a key factor in our mental health also.  It is a natural anti-depressant that helps me to keep going.  So do what works for you.  Go for a run, take a class, lift some weights, join a yoga studio.  Meditate.  Breathe.  Accept yourself and carry forward.

beauty

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Sometimes, if we take a step back and look at things with fresh eyes, we see things differently.  Things we never saw before.  Maybe we chose not to see them, or maybe we just couldn’t at the time.  Maybe something was blocking our senses that caused us to miss whatever it is we caught on that second time around.  Whatever it was, beauty really is all around us.

I took a mental health day away from work this week.  It was necessary.  Some things were building up that made it virtually impossible to manage all the weights that were pushing down on me. I spent time in solitude, meditated, and in self care during an extended massage therapy session.  I took a look at what was happening around me in my world.  Not the whole world, not the weights of the political forum or the war and conflict around the world and in our backyards.  Just my world.  What was pushing down on me?  What was I pushing back against? Who or what was I pushing away, and what was it that kept gently tapping on my door, ignoring my requests to leave me be?

Solitude is a wonderful thing.  Everyone needs a little time in silence, I firmly believe that.  Some things become clearer within that quiet space.  Not everything.  But nothing worth doing comes that easy, remember that.

When I woke this morning, I felt a greater sense of calmness than I have felt in some time.  It doesn’t mean that my stresses or stressors have gone away; they are still there.  In fact, even today, I have noticed twice that one of my stressors has been present.  I don’t have a solution to this issue as of yet, but it made itself known and while not contacting me directly, it left me to witness it.  A reminder that it still exists and to beware.  Beyond that, I have also decided to allow one thing that I have pushed away to gain entry into my life again.  That gentle tapping refused to go away, even with months of ignoring or even gruffness on my part to encourage it to leave me be.  I let it in.  I forgot how beautiful it was, or perhaps I am just now seeing it with different or more open eyes.  With eyes of a gentler soul or a more relaxed view.  I felt a weight lift off of me, perhaps felt a little more free or lighter, so to speak.

I noticed the beauty of spring today.  The melting of the small plots of snow, the rabbits changing colors back from white to brown, the songbirds in the trees playfully chasing each other around.  I noticed the flowers in the shops, ready for Easter celebrations.  It reminded me that renewal is occurring all around me and encompasses me too.  Take time to notice what is in your surroundings.  Notice the devoted love from your dog, the love from your friends or family, the buds forming in the spring trees or the grass greening up.  Notice your world and see the beauty around you too.
